I often get asked, “How did you get to where you are?” To which I respond, “Mediocrity?”

The real answer… public speaking, community involvement, not sucking at what I do and genuinely enjoying my work.

Now, I can’t help you with all these topics. But I can give you some advice on getting start with being recognized. Start submitting to speak at conferences. Conference organizers love new faces. Start with smaller conferences and user groups to build your skill.

Here are a few tips you should find helpful when submitting:

Be authentic! Your peers need real-world scenarios they can use. Give original presentation ideas that focus on knowledge transfer, with engaging and relevant examples.

Include as much detail about the planned presentation as possible. The more they know about what you plan to present and why it matters, the better.

Keep it free of marketing.

Keep the audience in mind: they’re forward-minded, professional, and already pretty smart.

Clearly identify the level of the talk: is it for beginners to the topic, or for gurus? What knowledge should people have when they come to the presentation?

Give it a simple and straightforward title or name—fancy and clever titles or descriptions make it harder for people (committee and attendees) to figure out what you’re really talking about.

Limit the scope of the talk: Pick a useful aspect, or a particular technique, or walk through a simple program.

Explain why people will want to attend: Is the framework gaining traction? Is the app critical to modern systems? Will they learn how to deploy it, program it, or just what it is?

To be honest, I don’t always follow my own advice. But I do try to stick close to it.

Good luck and let me know if you get accepted to speak somewhere.

If you’re a developer who wants to write applications that run on the iPhone, you should attend the Beginning iPhone Bootcamp at CFUnited.

The first two units of the course are devoted to learning Objective-C, followed by an intensive iPhone Bootcamp. Beginning iPhone Bootcamp will take you from complete novice to being able to build an iPhone application with confidence. After an introduction to Objective-C and the Foundation framework, we jump into the toolchain and the classes that make up the iPhone UI framework. Lots of practical advice and lots of hands-on walkthroughs.

In this one day bootcamp we will not cover everything about the iPhone, but it will certainly get you started and enhance your confidence in building your first “app for that”.

Need more than a bootcamp? At On3, we will be releasing a 5 day training course for building iPhone applications using the 3.0 SDK. We plan on holding the first class in early August at our training center location in Downtown Denver.

My blog has been quiet lately due to a number of reasons, but the #1 reason is that I”m working on the AIR: Building Desktop Applications with Flex course for Adobe. Having been an instructor for many years and a developer for even longer, this is a great opportunity for me to give back to the community. And for those of you who have seen me in action, know that I do a lot of giving.

I just wanted to share a little bit with you about the soon to be released Flex 2 courses. Yes, courses!
There are plans for a few courses focusing on Flex 2 application development, charting with Flex 2 and even a visual design course for Flex 2.

I”m really excited about this news for two reasons; appropriate focus on student needs, the courses themselves are exceptional.

At what level are you too experienced to attend a Flex 2 class? Having worked with and taught Flex for over two years, I can honestly say that there is a course for everyone.

If you are not an object oriented programmer, there will be an ActionScript 3 course that will prepare you for Flex 2.

If you are new to Flex but an experienced OO developer, you will take to Flex 2 like a fish to water. ActionScript 3 closely follows ECMAScript, as close as you can possibly get since it is still evolving. Encapsulation, Class Inheritance, Packages, Design Patterns, etc… You”ll love it.

If you are an experienced Flex developer, the course material is very comprehensive. You will not be disappointed. There are some big changes in Flex 2, therefore there are big changes to the courses.

There will be a course tailored to those who need Flex 2 Charting

There will be a course tailored to customizing the design of Flex 2 application

With multiple courses to choose from, it is much easier for students to focus on what they need.

Secondly, having attended the courses myself, I was very impressed with the content, the quality and the courseware. The course developers did an exceptional job of covering a vast amount of material without leaving anything out and more importantly, without requiring the student to have a doctorate.

I”m now anxiously awaiting the release of Flex 2 and the Flex 2 courses even more!
